Novice Course - Week 7 - Plate

Week 7 is when things really start to heat up (not literally, we don't want any fiery accidents in the workshop). This is when you'll be making your very own plate, using a bowl gouge and skew. Don't worry if you're feeling a bit intimidated, that's completely normal - just remember to take things one step at a time and not to plate too much pressure on yourself. Of course, you'll have 1-1 mentoring with experienced turners to guide you along the way, so you won't be plate-ing this one alone. Get ready to turn some heads (and plates) with your newfound skills!

Novice Course - Week 6 - Bowl

Week 6 of our 7-week novice course is where we get ready to bowl you over! Get ready to unleash your inner woodturning artist as you tackle the art of bowl making. With the guidance of our experienced turners and a trusty bowl gouge, you'll learn the techniques and skills needed to turn a simple piece of wood into a beautiful bowl. And don't worry if it's not perfectly round, we like to call those "rustic" bowls around here. As always, 1-1 mentoring is available to help you hone your skills and bring your vision to life. So grab your tools and let's get turning!

Novice Course - Week 5 - Trivet With Ceramic Inset

Welcome to week 5 of the novice course, where we'll be making trivets with a ceramic insert. Don't worry, we won't be asking you to make a ceramic insert from scratch. We know you're here to learn woodturning, not pottery. You'll get to use a pre-made insert that will fit nicely into the wooden base you turn on the lathe. We'll also be introducing the bowl gouge, which is a fancy name for a tool that helps you shape bowls. And as always, our experienced turners will be there to provide one-on-one mentoring.

Novice Course - Week 4 - Paper Towel Holder

Week 4 is all about keeping your workshop spick and span with the paper towel holder project. You'll learn to turn a holder that'll keep your paper towels close at hand while you're making a mess... er, masterpiece. Our experienced turners will teach you the art of skewing and gouging (no, not the type of gouging you do when you see the price of wood), and of course, there will be plenty of 1-1 mentoring to help you get the hang of it. Who knew that turning wood could be so much fun? Join us for a barrel of laughs (and sawdust) in week 4!

Novice Course - Week 3 - Rolling Pin

Week 3 of our novice course is all about rolling pins and the joy of rolling out dough without having it stick to the pin. You'll learn how to turn a handle that's ergonomic and easy to use, and then use a skew, roughing gouge, and spindle gouge to shape the rolling pin itself. Of course, if you're anything like us, you might end up with a rolling pin that's more like a medieval weapon than a baking tool, but that's all part of the fun! And as always, our experienced turners will be there for 1-1 mentoring to help you bring your unique vision to life.

Novice Course - Week 2 - Tool Handle

Welcome to Week 2 of our novice course! This week we'll be tackling the tricky tools of the trade, including the infamous skew chisel. Don't worry, we'll guide you through it with our expert mentoring and plenty of laughs. You'll learn how to handle and care for your tools like a pro, while also discovering the joys of roughing gouges and spindle gouges. And if you accidentally create a toothpick instead of a tool handle, we promise not to laugh (too much). So come join us for a fun and educational week!

Novice Course - Week 1 - Intro to turning

Week one of the novice course will focus on lathe safety and familiarisation with the lathe. Novices will be introduced to various lathe tools, including the skew, roughing gouge, bowl gouge, and spindle gouge, and will have the opportunity to practice turning wood round, creating beads, and coves. And of course, we'll be sure to add some humor to keep things light and enjoyable!
