Novice Course

The 7-week novice course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to woodturning. In week one, students will focus on familiarisation with the lathe, lathe safety, and an introduction to lathe tools. They will have the opportunity to practice turning wood round, beads, and coves. In addition to group instruction, students will receive 1-1 mentoring from experienced turners. Over the course of the program, students will create a range of projects including a tool handle, rolling pin, trivet, paper towel holder, bowl, and platter. Students will also learn the fundamentals of turning including how to use a skew, roughing gouge, bowl gouge, and spindle gouge. By the end of the course, students will have gained confidence and proficiency in basic woodturning techniques, and will have joined a supportive community of fellow woodturners.
